Don't Give Your Audience What They Need

You have an idea you love and you want others to love it too. You have services, products, and programs you know can help your audience. You know that to get what they want, they need to be more confident on video, develop better morning habits, or swap potato chips for kale chips. But they're not biting, literally.

Your heart's in the right place, so what are you doing wrong?

You're giving your audience what they NEED, not what they WANT.

  • You know that they need more confidence on video, but they're looking to get more followers on Instagram.

  • You see that they need to let go of a toxic relationship, but they want to know, "Is my boyfriend cheating on me?"

  • You want them to make a business plan, but they're searching for how to get more people to buy their products.

You never want to give your audience something they don't like, or they're not ready for. Instead, meet them in the middle – which is where they’re at.

Here are several more examples:

Your audience needs to be more confident and to show up live on Instagram.

But what they want is to get more sales, followers, or to grow their email list.

Your audience needs to eat healthier.

But what they want is to lose ten pounds, lose belly fat, or to feel less tired all the time.

Your audience needs to develop better habits.

But what they want is to easily post consistent content, finish their book, or get more clients.

Remember, speak to where they are, not where you want them to be.

So how do you discover your audience's "wants?" By asking yourself this question:

What is the main result, benefit, or transformation I offer? Or what solution do I offer that'll help them overcome a specific problem?

Get their first 1,000 subscribers? Or get six-pack abs? Or is it to sell more courses, coaching packages, or candles?

Always remember, your audience is looking for one thing:

What's in it for me?

How is this going to help me achieve a goal, solve a problem and/or improve my life?

Here are three action steps to give your audience what they want:

  1. Listen. What’re they saying in private groups and on social media? Pay close attention to their thoughts, feelings, struggles and desires.
  2. Make a list of your audience's wants.
  3. Create several content ideas for each "want."

For example:

They want to sell more coaching packages.

So, there you have it.
